Vista Maria is proud to celebrate the achievements of Sherita Hopkins, who was recently accepted into the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ (MDHHS) Behavioral Health Advisory Council (BHAC). This new role is in addition to her ongoing service on the Guy Thompson Parent Advisory Council (GTPAC), where she has been an active member since October 2023.
The Behavioral Health Advisory Council plays a critical role in shaping Michigan’s mental health and substance use policies. Established in 2013, the council ensures that adults with serious mental illness, children with serious emotional disturbances, and individuals with substance use disorders receive the services they need. As a member, Sherita will help review and advocate for improvements to Michigan’s mental health and substance abuse services, ensuring that policies reflect the needs of those most impacted.
In her work with the Guy Thompson Parent Advisory Council, Sherita has been instrumental in advocating for families navigating the child welfare system. From reviewing policies to engaging in legislative advocacy, she has helped shape the conversation around family preservation and child welfare reform.
Sherita’s passion for advocacy and her commitment to making a difference are truly inspiring. As she embarks on this new journey with the Behavioral Health Advisory Council, we know she will be a strong voice for those in need. We look forward to seeing the impact of her leadership in this new role.
Congratulations, Sherita! Your dedication to service and advocacy embodies the mission of Vista Maria—to help individuals realize a life beyond trauma and ignite a life of possibility.
